“Six miles of nature and beauty, the trail — a converted railroad track that parallels U.S. Highway 80 — once carried [Savannah] passengers to and from Tybee Island. Presently, the trail is approximately 6 miles in length and 10′-20′ in width.  Its inhabitants include a wide range of wildlife species, such as, the Diamond Back Terrapin, Eastern Box Turtle, American Alligator and even an occasional Bobcat. Birds nesting or feeding in the area are almost too numerous to mention, but include Osprey, Great Blue Heron, Red-tailed Hawk, Brown Pelican and Willet. Located just past Bull River, the trail runs along Tybee Road’s causeway.” Source: City of Savannah GA, Walking Trails

Walking Trail / Cycling Trail History

“Built on a stretch of the Savannah & Atlantic Railroad line [later Central of Georgia], the 6-mile McQueens Island Historic Trail offers a salt-air excursion for nature lovers and history buffs alike. Built in 1887, the railroad carried passengers from Savannah to Tybee Island, a popular turn-of-the-century beach resort. A highway to the island was built in 1923, leading to the demise of the railroad.” -Source: Rails to Trails Conservancy

The rails to trail bike and walking trail was converted in the early 1990s. Access and parking are off U.S. 80 near Fort Pulaski and Bull River Bridge. Photos and a rail map are located at
